Gooseberry Pie

Saturday, 14 July 2013
Monika brought some gooseberries and a few red-currants from her garden and we made them into this pie. The pastry baked much more quickly than the recipe suggests and was a little dry around the edges, but overall the pie was delicious. The gooseberry filling was probably more tart than most people would like, but we found it just right and scoffed the whole pie in one sitting.

Steak and Kidney Pie

Saturday, 7th May
A classic and something I haven't had for far too long. I love kidney, so I make it half and half with the steak. The gravy has onions, some red wine and stock with a dash of Worcester sauce. No vegetables needed. I only made a small pie and this was half of it. Naturally I ate the other half as well. Bliss on a plate.

Lamb and Spinach pie

Sunday, 3rd April
A dish I have not cooked for years!  The pie is made with cubed lamb, onions, garlic, cumin, coriander, spinach and a spoonful of orange marmalade in filo pastry. Together with rosemary potatoes and courgette with a yoghurt dressing. The pie was every bit as good as I remember. Subtly spicy and sweet, the lamb was tender, the spinach flavoursome and the flaky pastry a lovely contrast to the richness of the filling. The courgettes were overdone for my taste (the perils of playing scrabble while cooking!), but overall a win! A bottle of blanc-de-noirs Spätburgunder sekt washed it down very nicely.
